Hello GrizzlyMan Adventure Racers! With one week left before race day, there is still a little snow on the course, yet the course can be completed in its entirety. The reported warmer weather this week should really help the course conditions. Prepare for light snow and mud on the course. It may be beneficial to bring some traction aids like the YakTrax Pro if you have smooth-soled running shoes.

Race packets will be available at Runner’s Edge on Friday and at check-in on Saturday. Check-in is in Lot M near the Van Bueren footbridge and Kim Williams Trailhead on the University of Montana Campus (46º51’55.32”N 113º59’03.18”W). All public parking on campus is fair game. Racers can begin check-in at 6:30am on race day. If you are on a team, please check in with your team member. If you have not submitted a team name during registration, please email it to info@grizzlymanrace.com

The run-to-bike transition area is in the Pattee Canyon Picnic Area, Lot C. You can take the shuttle or drive yourself. If you drive your own vehicle to the transition area, you will need to park outside the picnic area gate along Pattee Canyon Drive (shown below). Remember that the race staff is not responsible for any gear left in the transition area after racers leave. Please plan accordingly to pack out all gear when you leave transition on your bike since you will not come back through that area during the race.

The pre-race safety brief will be at the starting line at 9:30am. Please ensure you are checked in and have your transition area gear set before 9:30am. The race will begin after the KidVenture Race is complete around 10am. Don’t forget to stick around after the race for the awards ceremony and gear give-away!

For orienteering, we will provide a 1:25k scale protractor that you may keep. This is properly formatted for the map scale we are using and is helpful for determining grid azimuths between points on the map.

About the GrizzlyMan Adventure Race

The GrizzlyMan Adventure Race covers 23 miles of trail and open terrain, over 3500 feet of climbing on foot or bike, and will take most racers between 5-6 hours to complete. Disciplines include trekking, biking, orienteering, and exciting special challenges. Racers can compete solo or as a pairs team (non-relay). Teams categories are male, female, coed, collegiate (coed), and Hometown Heroes (coed fire, rescue, police, military, forest service, etc). Registration is limited to 300 participants and wave starts will minimize bottlenecks on the course.  Wave starts will be organized by division: solo, then teams.  Within the divisions, racers will position themselves in a wave relative to their perceived ability.  Racers in earlier waves should be faster and more experienced than the later waves.  Roughly positioning the faster teams toward the front will help minimize bottlenecks on the course.  Each wave will consist of eight racers with each wave starting at one-minute intervals.  Racers’ start times will be adjusted to account for the wave they start in so there is no penalty for starting in a later wave.

Due to the preparation required for an event of this scale, race-day registration will not be permitted. Race Expo will feature local businesses and charities. Expo will feature activities for children, food vendors, and shopping to pass the time for spectators. The GrizzlyMan Race Clinic Series is scheduled at the Missoula, MT REI and will cover Adventure Racing Basics, Orienteering and Terrain Association, and Emergency Bike Maintenance. Please visit the REI website for details.

The Kidventure

The KidVenture is a free adventure race for the kids that will feature treasure hunt style navigation, an inflatable obstacle course, and prizes for all participants. Intended for all children to age 12 with awards and prizes for all participants.  Race-day registration for the KidVenture will be permitted.  There is no bike portion in this race.  A map will be provided to racers that is appropriate for younger children.  Parents/guardians are welcome to participate with their children.  The KidVenture will begin between 9:45am and 10am after the pre-race safety briefing but before the main race begins.  During the KidVenture, racers not participating with the KidVenture will begin organizing into the waves near the starting line.

Scoring & Race Rules

Download Scoring & Race Rules- [Adobe .pdf | Microsoft .doc]

Scoring
The precedence for scoring is number of checkpoints punched (minus penalties) then finishing time. For example, a team that completed all checkpoints, but was the last team across the finish line would be the winner.

Race Rules

  1. All racers are expected to be examples of good sportsmanship. Racers must treat fellow racers & race staff with courtesy and respect. Strict penalties will be assessed for unsportsmanlike behavior based on the infraction.
  2. Penalties may be compounded if applicable. For example, if you are caught using a cell phone to aid another team in finding a checkpoint while over 30 yards from your teammate (if in Pairs division), you would be assessed a six point penalty.
  3. Race officials reserve the right to remove a team from the course for health, safety or other reasons, at the discretion of race officials and medical personnel.
  4. All CPs must be obtained in order (UNLESS SPECIFIED). Teams that miss a CP will be ranked after teams that obtain all CPs. Missing a CP is defined as not going to a CP.
  5. Race officials reserve the right to alter time cut-offs or the course itself to accommodate changing conditions and to ensure that teams finish on time. If your team is re-routed or there are other course changes, teams must sign the check-in sheet to acknowledge they understand the course change.
  6. Any team withdrawing from the race must notify a “live” person by checking in with a CP or volunteer or by calling the race director. Failing to notify race officials will result in that team being responsible for all search and rescue expenses.
  7. Any protest must be filed in writing within one hour of the team’s finish and will be reviewed by the Race Committee. Protests are filed at the help desk located near the start/finish line. Unprofessional or improper protests will not be favorably considered.
  8. Teams must always remain within 30 yards of teammate & within visual contact (unless otherwise specified and if in Pairs division).
    PENALTY: 2 points per infraction
  9. Passports must be carried the entire race.
PENALTY: Lost passport = Disqualification from rankings
  10. Race number must be worn on the outside of clothing at all times.
    PENALTY: 2 points per infraction
  11. Teams must punch passport in correct space at each checkpoint.
PENALTY: Incorrect punch or failure to punch, team will not receive credit for that CP.
  12. Mandatory gear must be carried at all times and will be checked on the course.
  13. PENALTY: 2 points for each piece of missing gear.
  14. No GPS of any kind including GPS pace counters are allowed.
    PENALTY: Disqualification.
  15. Bicycle helmets are required at all times during the race.
PENALTY: For not wearing bike helmet – disqualification
  16. Racers must follow Rules of Travel as outlined in Course Instructions. Where no specific path is designated, teams select their path between CPs. When instructions designate a specific route, teams must follow that path.
PENALTY: For travel on forbidden roads or violating Rules of Travel - each offense 2 points
  17. Race officials will provide trash points at some CPs. There is no food / gear drop unless specified by Race Officials.
    PENALTY: 2 points per infraction
  18. Athletes may not receive outside assistance except from Race Officials. Other registered teams may help for injured or mechanically distressed racers, but not to aid in CP location.
PENALTY: Unauthorized aid – 2 points per infraction
  19. Use of cellular phone is for emergencies only. No other use is allowed.
PENALTY: Unauthorized use of cell phone – 2 points per infraction

Parking at the GrizzlyMan

All non-handicap parking spaces on the University of Montana campus are available on race day for participant parking.  Parking passes are not required.  See parking map on our website.  Shuttle service will be available to move racers and their bikes between the starting point and the transition area.  The shuttle leaves UM at 7, 8, and 9am and leaves the transition area at 7:30, 8:30, and 9:30am.  All racers on the last shuttle from the transition area must move directly to the starting once arriving on campus for the safety brief.  Personal vehicles are allowed to drop off bikes and transition gear, but shuttle use is preferred in order to minimize traffic.
