Frequently Asked Questions

I’m travelling to the race from out of town.  Are there any lodging accommodations?
There are campsites near the transition area and many local hotels with various accommodations.  No lodging is coordinated through this race, however.

Cancelation policy
Entries may be cancelled up until 14 March, 2008 for a refund of $15 per racer.  After 14 March, 2008, no refunds will be granted.  You may sell or transfer your entry to another team or individual up until 4 April, 2008 at no cost, although you must contact race management for confirmation of the change.

Why do I only get back $15 if I cancel?
Because we may not be able to resell your entry.  Please be sure you intend to race before you register.  After registration, your race materials have been reserved and will be paid for by race management whether you race or not.  Remember that you are free to sell your entry on your own to another racer at full price through 4 April, 2008.

What is provided for the race?
In addition to a challenging, exciting, and safe race, you will be supplied with a map/passport, nutritional supplements by Hammer Nutrition before and during the race, registration bag schwag, emergency bike maintenance at the transition area if needed (first-come, first serve), post-race food and beverages.  An expo at the base of the M Trail will include race updates, climbing wall, inflatable obstacle course, sponsor displays/giveaways/demonstrations, race-related classes, vendor product and food sales, and the awards ceremony main stage.

What is the race route?
The specifics of the route will be released in a flyer in the registration bags and in the pre-race video and safety brief.

What are the event leg distances (running, orienteering, and bike)?
The running/orienteering distance is 3-5 miles; the rest is on the bike.

What does the route consist of?
Hills. In general, the route is on trails, improved roads, and open forest terrain.

Will the hilltop aid stations provide respirators or oxygen?
No, all racers must complete the race with unassisted breathing. The medical personnel will be happy to supplement you with intravenous fluids, however!

What is the route for this race?
Some of the course specifics are intentionally withheld; this element of the unknown is one of the obstacles that racers must overcome. If we broadcasted the exact course then local competitors would get the great advantage of training on the same course. The race begins and ends on the University of Montana Campus and general area of the race is the Pattee Canyon Recreation area.

Can a cyclocross bike be used on this course?
Cyclocross bikes can be used on this course, but mountain bikes should be preferred. The geometry of the cyclocross bikes could make some of the descents a tricky balancing act. The narrow tires could pinch-flat easier over the rocky areas and slow racers down in thick mud. Regardless, you should race on what you are comfortable riding.
